SADFAS continues to support and develop arts-related activities among young people in the Stratford–upon–Avon area.
If any member knows of a group which could benefit from the Society's support for a Young Arts music project this year, please inform Margaret Cunnington (Young Arts Secretary) either on lecture days or ring her on 024 76 622 899 with the details of the person within the School/College/Society to be contacted.
Bookbinding Course, March 2011
This whole day event was arranged for a Year 10 Art Examination group at Stratford upon Avon Grammar School for Girls. Led by an expert professional bookbinder and lecturer, the girls were introduced to the tools of bookbinding, materials and methods of cutting, folding and finishing. Following an introductory demonstration the girls made their own very simple examples to be followed by a more intricate design. The samples made were of a high standard and are to be included in examination files for GCSE.
Big Mouth Concert
Following the Society's donation to the Armonico Big Mouth Appeal, sponsorship for ten pupils to be trained and supported for the celebration concert in the Royal Albert Hall in December 2012 is going ahead. Attendance at a performance of Carmina Burana at the RST was well supported and the contribution of the Childrens' Choir deemed a great success.
Other smaller concerts during 2011–2012 as a build up to the December concert will be taking place, (SADFAS members are welcome to attend); details are published locally by the Armonico Consort.
Wilmcote Primary School Music Day, July 2011
A very enjoyable, noisy and successful day was held for selected instrumentalists from within the School. A variety of instruments were represented, including xylophone, trumpets, violins, guitars and flutes. The purpose was not only to produce music for a performance to the rest of the School but also to show the pupils how important it is to watch and listen in a controlled way even when not actually playing themselves. A German folk tune, “The Cuckoo and the Donkey”, was played by Jackie Tyler and Peter Walden from the CBSO who led the group for the day. Children were then divided into groups and asked to produce their own versions of the piece. A whole group piece was also produced. The day was most enjoyable for all concerned. At an afternoon performance for parents and the remainder of the School, Classes One and Two violinists played an introduction. Then individual goups played their own compositions before combining to perform their joint version. Finally the trumpeters played a fanfare as the pupils returned to their classrooms.
NADFAS/RSBA National Art Competition, 2011-2012
As last year, the Society circulated all local secondary schools and the College with details of the Competition. This year there were positive responses from Ms Ann Taylor of the Girls' Grammar School and Ms Wendy Freeman of Stratford College.
Fifty four societies submitted three hundred and ten art works from eighty three institutions so selection was a challenging process. Winning entries will have their work displayed at the RSBA Annual Exhibition at the Pall Mall Galleries in London.
Two students from the College have been selected to show their work; Patrick Hands' painting “Woman in a Fur Coat” and Emma Clitheroe's sculpture “Startled” will be displayed. In addition, Patrick Hands' drawing “Lady Macbeth” will be displayed as a 10X8 inch reproduction.
The successful students will receive the title of RSBA Scholar.
The Exhibition is open to the public from February 29th to March 10th inclusive.
