SADFAS continues to support and develop arts-related activities among young people in the Stratford–upon–Avon area.
Following the great success of the SADFAS Young Arts projects at Tanworth–in–Arden Nursery School and Bridgetown Primary School during the year March 2009 – 2010, the focus this year is to be placed on music development, either in schools, colleges or youth organisations in the Stratford-upon-Avon area.
Contact has been made with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Armonico Society based in Warwick and the Orchestra of the Swan. All three organisations offer exciting ideas and support for music projects with young people which can be tailored to the needs and abilities of the group involved and the demands of the curriculum.
As well as supporting projects, assistance may be given in other ways, such as providing financial help with a concert or production, or assisting with the provision of basic instruments required for the musical development of the pupils/students.
Discussions are already in progress with interested parties. The final selection of the proposal(s) to be supported and the amount(s) to be given, rests with the SADFAS Committee.
If any member knows of a group which could benefit from the Society's support for a Young Arts music project this year, please inform Margaret Cunnington (Young Arts Secretary) either on lecture days or ring her on 024 76 622 899 with the details of the person within the School/College/Society to be contacted.
The Royal Society of British Artists National Art Competition for A level students.
Following a very successful pilot scheme in 2009, the Royal Society of British Artists, supported by NADFAS, are inviting entries for a National Art Competition open to A level students.
Twenty–two pieces of submitted work will be selected by RSBA and NADFAS judges from all the national entries. Those chosen will be exhibited at the society's annual exhibition in their Pall Mall, London gallery in March 2011. These winning students will be allowed to sell their work, if they so wish and will receive the title of NADFAS/RSBA scholar.
Various institutions in the area were notified. A visit was made by SADFAS committee members, Jean Vaudeau, Yvonne O'Hara and Margaret Cunnington to Stratford upon Avon Girls' Grammar School at the invitation of the Head of the Art Department – Ms Ann Taylor, which resulted in a selection of work being forwarded to NADFAS for consideration. Competition will be keen as this is a national competition and we await to see if any of the candidates are selected.
Wilmcote School
A music day at Wilmcote Primary School will take place on 12 July, sponsored by SADFAS. Two instrumentalists from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) will take a story/music session with Key Stage 1 pupils. Also during the day, individual older pupils will have instrumental lessons. Pupils will perform their work to parents later in the day.
